Here’s the story of how the Fit Men Cook app came to be…

When it comes to a healthy diet, we all start off with the best intentions.

You go to the supermarket, go straight past the frozen pizza, bread and start loading up your shopping basket with avocados, tomatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, chicken, olive oil, coconut oil.

You reach home and proudly stare at the produce in front of you declaring “This time, it’s going to be different!”

However, as time goes on you start to crave your old meals. Eating healthy becomes dreading eating the same dull things. With time, you find yourself returning to your old habits.

That’s why when I stumbled across Fit Men Cook, like the million other Instagram fans before me, I knew that I’d found something different.

Yes, Kevin’s meals were vibrant, tasty, and yes, his physical appearance makes you think “wow, if I eat the same as him I’ll get to look like that!” but it was far more than that.

There was an enthusiasm in his videos and a simplicity in his meals. Also, there was no mention of Paleo or any other type of diet. But, what really clicked for me is when I saw three words.

“Weekly meal prep”.

What exactly is that? I dived in and discovered at it’s heart it’s the idea that you cook once a week and then you’ve got a fridge full of healthy meals for the rest of the week.

It struck me as perfect as I’d always complained about preparing healthy meals being too time consuming.

Right there and then, I knew this needed to be an app.

You hear the phrase “working day and night” but myself and the team at Nibble Apps truly did that, for 4 months. In our excitement we just kept pushing further and further, adding new features. We set ourselves ever loftier goals and we couldn’t be prouder of the end result.

So what makes the app so special?

Let me share my 3 favourite things…

Calorie and macro tracking using Apple’s HealthKit

The first thing a good personal trainer will do, is take a look at your diet. It turns out what we eat, is far more important than what we do in the gym. Most of the results will come from diet and then in the gym you help sculpt your body further.

A gym trainer will give you something like this:

It’ll show how many calories you need to be eating to reach your goals and in particular how much protein, fat and carbohydrates needs to be in your diet.

The chances are your personal trainer will recommend you use My Fitness Pal.

Now that’s well and good and it’s an incredible app that I’ve used myself.

However, you’ll quickly find it quite time consuming entering all the data. Search for an egg, boiled, enter the number of servings, next search for chicken, now sweet potato. By the time you’ve put everything together, you’re ready to give up.

Now let’s compare that to the Fit Men Cook app:

In all it takes… ooohhh… maybe 3 seconds to add in the nutrient information:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of a recipe
  2. Tap add to Health app

Done! That’s it.

Now you can load up the Apple Health app and see exactly what your numbers are for the day, the week. You can forward that to your trainer, track the effects of changing up your macros or any other myriads of uses.

There’s a real pleasure in such ease.

Making trips to the grocery store easy

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not a big fan of spending hours at the grocery store, nor am I fan of making shopping lists.

This is at the heart of the kind of problem we love to solve at Nibble Apps.

The shopping list feature in our app is smart. It organises things by aisle, so you can quickly get around the store. You can add your own items. You can even take it with you on the Apple Watch.

Using Apple’s CloudKit technology, we’ve even managed to make it so that when you add the ingredients of a recipe to your shopping list on your iPad, it appears on the shopping list on your iPhone. The seamless syncing has been a feature we’ve had requested repeatedly from users and we’ve now delivered it!

Scale serving sizes

The folks are coming round for the weekend, or you’re having your best friends over for a party or you just want to prepare extra servings of a recipe to eat throughout the week. With the Fit Men Cook app you can tap to increase the number of servings of any recipe. The ingredients will scale up before your very eyes so you can see exactly what you’ll need.

Is there more?

Of course there’s more. I haven’t even talked about:

  • Adding your own notes to recipes
  • Sharing pictures of your recipes with our Instagram integration
  • Seeing what modifications others have made to recipes through our unique Instagram hashtag for each recipe
  • Switching between cups and grams.
  • Available in English and Spanish
  • Email a recipe to a friend
  • Search by ingredients you have in your pantry
  • Watch recipe videos

The 120 green smoothie recipes, each with a mouth watering picture and description of the health benefits, make this one of the most comprehensive recipe apps in the App Store. The 30 Day Green Smoothie challenge was launched in collaboration with Young and Raw and Fat-Burning Man.
